In the past, several million tonnes of metallurgical slags have been dumped as waste from various metal production facilities. In the production process, the contaminations are bound together and separated in the so called slag-phase. Due to process inefficiencies, some metal is entrapped in the final slags that are discharged. Historical metal production was less efficient compared to modern process technologies. Today's metal prices justify the reclamation of these dumps, as well as the use of the mineral fraction for road construction purposes.
