Worldwide, about 150.000 tonnes per year of spent catalyst are generated from demetallization processes in the petrochemical industry. Today's oil production requires an extensive refinery process in order to remove the ever increasing amounts of heavy metals, sulfur and other polluting elements from the crude oil. By recycling the spent catalyst material, the heavy metals can be recovered. With metal concentrations up to 16%, Synvase recognizes that these waste streams as an important secondary source for metals like nickel, vanadium, molybdenum and cobalt. With the increasing demand for raw materials, securing these metal sources for the near future is crucial.
